ExcelU - Health, Strength, & Nutrition

The ExcelU program is unique in that it addresses a major component that is sorely missing in education – particularly of scholar athletes: health, strength, and nutrition. Historically, these issues have been addressed minimally in isolation, if at all. The results have been unnecessary injury and poor overall wellness. Also, poor nutrition has long been recognized as a major hindrance to academic achievement. As a crucial part of a holistic approach to ensure the success of participants, ExcelU has raised the bar in what this means with its Health, Strength and Nutrition component.

Developed in collaboration with nationally renowned specialists in the field, this unequaled component takes a year-long look at the exercises and nutrition needed for each sport that a student might encounter. In addition to addressing the sport in-season, the Health, Strength and Nutrition component looks at out of season as well – ensuring that each student is equipped with the tools necessary to maximize health and wellness. With this comprehensive resource, coaches are better able to meet the needs of the individual scholar-athlete they serve, parents are more informed to make healthy choices for their families, and students themselves are empowered to self-monitor and improve their physical and nutritional soundness.

ExcelU - Win All Four

Most scholar-athletes have as a goal to play the sport of their choice for a college or university, usually with an athletic scholarship. In order to do this, they must be NCAA eligible. An unfortunate occurrence is that many lack the academic acumen for this to happen. Thus, the important remedy of ExcelU that differentiates it from other programs – the Win All Four component. The brainchild of Mike Kostoff, an educator/coach who saw student after student get their collegiate athletic hopes dashed due to academic missteps, Win All Four is a comprehensive tool that allows students, counselors, coaches and parents anticipate and monitor the academic needs to be NCAA eligible. With plan of actions directed for each year of high school, Win All Four is unique in that planning for college is proactive, rather than reactive. It recognizes the pitfalls that students often fall into, with practical methods to avoid them.

ExcelU - High School

ExcelU focuses on key principles that were created by founder, former NBA player, Willie Burton. His foundation of - Learn. Play. Win Together. - fulfills a need to provide students and student-athletes to have personal and professional skills and exposure to become successful. ExcelU curriculum, works to discover students hidden talent with the lessons taught in ExcelU.

The program's diversity expands to include all student-scholars from elementary through high school. Our internal and external supporting team is comprised of former student-athletes and student-scholars who have dedicated themselves to help prepare today’s students to excel in any field of their choosing, including athletics.

In today’s education foundation, a variety of systems have been created to allow what is known as healthy competition. As the educational system progresses students, athletes, and institutions will become even more competitive, and the need for effective methods of teaching will increase.

The vision of ExcelU is focused on providing curriculum that guides schools, communities, and families in methods and strategies needed to promote academic success and personal wellness in athletes, students and beyond.

Virtual Mindfulness Lessons - Grade 6-12

At Starr Commonwealth, we are more committed than ever to supporting wellbeing for educators, students, families, and communities. Before school closures, we had partnered with several districts to bring mindfulness into classrooms to support a school culture of resilience. Now, we’re dedicated to bringing mindfulness practices to all. Mindfulness is defined as paying attention—intentionally without judgment—to what is happening right now. Mindfulness practices have been proven to support cognitive outcomes, social emotional skills, and wellbeing.

In order to continue to offer support, we have developed 6 weeks of mindfulness practices filmed by our Resilience Coaches that you can share with your families and students. We imagine there are two ways you may choose to utilize these videos. You can share them, and practice them directly with students if your educational platform allows, or you can share the links with students and families. Each week we will focus the mindfulness practice on a different present moment experience. The lessons for this particular program are focused on grades 6-12, however, we do offer a K-5 grade level alternative program (click here to learn more). Each lesson builds on the lesson before, provides some context about the lesson of the week, guides a mindful awareness practice, and finishes with reflection or discussion questions.
